Using the ONYX Printer & Profile Download Manager

Rob Bussell
ONYX

April 30, 2012

Purpose
The Printer & Profile Download Manager for ONYX makes obtaining printer installation files and media profiles for version 7.3.2, version X10 and X10.1 much easier than before. The Printer & Profile Download Manager was previously known as the Profile Download Client.

Using the Download Manager application, users can view the latest list of media profiles available for ONYX printer drivers. Users can select a custom set of profiles to download and then easily install them into their Version 7, X10 or X10.1 product. The manager application also offers the ability to get printer driver updates. Users can install the Printer & Profile Download Manager on any system running the most current version of ONYX, or on other Windows 2000 or XP Pro systems connected to the Internet. The .PrnInst files that are downloaded can only be used with the latest ONYX Versions.

Instructions

Once you have installed the Printer and Profile Download Manager, open it from your Start Menu in Windows. Select your Printer Make and Model, and then select which medias you would like to download. The medias you select will download as a “Printer install file” or “.prninst”. After clicking Download, you will be prompted for your hardware key number. Do not include the ONP- before the key number. You will be prompted for a download location for the Printer install file or .prninst, Once completed, you can use the Printer install file or .prninst in the following manners:

-If this is a new installation, you can simply run the Printer install file or .prninst to install the printer and medias selected.

-If you want to simply import your medias into an existing installation, open the ONYX RIP and go to “Configure Printer”, the “Media” tab, and click “Import”. Browse to the Printer install file or “.prninst” and proceed to import the medias you have downloaded.

Tips
Some users have experienced problems when the Download Manager tries to complete this process.  Because this validation goes to an https server to check the key through port 443, unblocking this port should resolve the issue. The key number requested is comprised of the digits following the "ONP" portion without the dash. When a key number starts with a zero, you leave off the zero and use the remaining seven digits.

Windows Vista and 7 users: If the Download Manager does not start when clicking on the menu item, right click the menu item and choose "run as
administrator" to get the application to run.

ONYX will no longer print to my networked printer
Symptom: ONYX no longer prints to your TCP/IP (network) printer. Your print jobs will drop to the buffered section and ONYX will report an error "Cannot start print".

This may be caused by invalid port configurations in ONYX. To verify you have the correct setup, go to Configure Printer, select the Device tab and click on Configure Port. Now select TCP/IP and then Configure. Verify that your IP address is correct and that you have the correct data port from the drop down menu.

Jeti printers use <port 8889> (this needs to be manually typed in as listed.
Earlier Epson models will use ESCP2. (except xx880 series and GS6000)
All other printers, select <port 9100>.

If these settings are correct click on the Test button.
If the IP address is valid, then click OK and return. Try reprinting something. If the error continues, communication may be blocked by antivirus or firewalls (including Windows firewall). Please either disable them or allow Port 9100 as an exception. To do this you may need to get in touch with your network administrator.

If a valid IP address is not detected, we need to verify that the printer is detected on the network.
To do this, from Windows, select the Start menu, and click on Run. Type in CMD and press Enter.
On the Command window type in ping (your printer's IP address) and hit Enter. The computer will attempt to communicate with the printer. If all packets are lost, you will need to get with your network administrator for assistance. The printer is no longer available.
